Manticore is one of the eight subsidiary companies that make up the rather nefarious company The Orochi Group. Unlike its main source, Moons of Madness is a single player experience that follows low security clearance Manticore engineer Shane Newheart, as he attempts to keep things running until the transport shuttle Cyrano sends in their replacements to the Mars base Invictus. I will preface the rest of the review by saying that you don’t have to know anything about The Secret World to enjoy Moons of Madness, but it will definitely add to its immersion if you do like myself. So when a new title featuring my favorite world surfaces in the form of Moons of Madness for Xbox One, by developer Rock Pocket Games, I was ready to test my sanity. It also just so happens to play an integral part in one of my favorite gaming worlds of all time, The Secret World, now Secret World Legends. Lovecraft for instance has been the inspiration for many a movie or videogame adaption. Aliens, is by far, one of my favorite spacefaring titles in any form of medium but there is something a bit more sinister if you step things to a cosmic scale. Instead, all you have here a somewhat scary horror game that manages to drown itself in a whole lot of pointless busywork.įuncom provided us with a Moons of Madness PS4 code for review purposes.“In space no one can hear you scream” Here exists one of the most perfect taglines in cinema that has defined my love for the space themed horror genre. Given how nice it looks, I suspect that if you were to strip out most of Moons of Madness’ gameplay - such as it is - you would’ve been left with a very solid (if somewhat short) horror walking simulator. Even if nothing else quite matches up to those opening moments, Moons of Madness still has the odd moment of genuine creepiness - but nearly all of them lose their impact thanks to the fact you’ve had your senses dulled by the seemingly endless repetition. The game opens with a creepy walk through the ravaged halls of your Mars base, and culminates in a moderately frightening (if, in retrospect, somewhat predictable) jump scare. It may be the more realistic option, but it really drains away the dramatic tension.Īnd to be sure, there is dramatic tension to be found. Any time Moons of Madness has the choice of making players take one or two steps to carry out a task, and making players take half a dozen or more steps to carry out a task, it opts for the latter. You don’t just put on a spacesuit and go outside, you…well, you get the picture. You find that a room has flooded, so you don’t just have to turn the sprinklers off and drain the room, you have to wander through hallway after hallway, occasionally adjusting screws and knobs, finding canisters, manually turning off sprinklers, and then inserting the canisters into a machine and adjusting their flows so that everything drains properly. You don’t just go to the canteen to get a cup of coffee, you go to the canteen, pick up your cup, insert it into the coffeemaker, turn the coffeemaker on, fill your cup, take it out, drink it up, and do it again - while also pausing to eat dehydrated food. You spend a huge chunk of time here carrying out menial tasks, and many of them seem like they’re as drawn out as possible. Pity, then, that the gameplay is so tedious. Everything looks crisp and clean, and, at least from a visual perspective, it delivers on its promise of being a cinematic experience. Moods of Madness, by contrast, looks very nice. Even if those games I linked in the previous paragraph were, to varying degrees, alright, none of them really stand out in my memory as being particularly well-made. While Moons of Madness follows in the footsteps in other recent games that draw on the works of HP Lovecraft (particularly Conarium), I don’t think there’s any denying it has substantially higher production values than any of them. Okay, that was needless snark in that last paragraph. A Lovecraftian horror game? Well, there’s something new. Or is it worth to buy illegal herb in the out of reach swamps where it cost's next to nothing, and risk smuggling it into the city where you can sell it for an amazing profit? But what if the city guards want to control you? Should you pay a bribe? How big? Maybe the best course of action is to say that you have nothing and hope they don't find anything? Maybe you'd like to pay a cheaper price for furs in the summer, and sell them for a hefty profit as the winter is coming and people need warmth.īut is it worth carrying them for so many days, risking robbery, moths and taking precious space that you could use to transport something now and make a profit immediately? The conditions are constantly changing, and supply and demand for different goods with them. He always expands his fleet of carts, he balances risks, calculates profitability. A good merchant surrounds himself with specialists smarter than him, people who help him maximize profits and minimize losses. A good merchant listens to rumours and gossips spread by travelers at inns and taverns hoping for a clue, a hint where to go, where a good deal awaits. He knows what forces influence the prices, what events affect them. And yet the job is harder than it seems.Ī good merchant needs to know everything about the market, he is always on the lookout for a deal, always listening, always engaging and deepening his knowledge. Buy low, sell high - a merchant's motto is easy to grasp. Your task is to roam the world and search of opportunities to score some profit. You start very humble, one cart, a purse of gold and silver coins is all that you have. Merchants of Kaidan is a challenging trading game fused with lots of RPG elements. *** PAY ONLY ONCE FOR THE WHOLE GAME *** - no micro-transactions, adds or any other tricks. Regain your riches, restore your honour and punish those who have wronged you. The theme and difficulty would line up and be great for families. There is a massive opportunity here to retheme this whole system with Scooby Doo and I think it would be a home run. At about $10 retail for 30 minutes of game that you can’t replay, I just can’t recommend it. Younger players may get more challenge out of it, the box shows ages 14-99, but I can’t judge that myself. The clues are mostly pretty obvious what chapters they go with and arranging them in order is pretty trivial. Both boxes took an average of 30 minutes to complete which I think just isn’t long enough to justify the game. The themes aren’t overly violent or gruesome but still fairly mature when it comes to kids. The second follows a murder in a proabition era speakeasy. The first is a mystery about a young girl training to be a ballerina that died under mysterious circumstances. For this review I played through the first two boxes. While everything is presented well and I think it really works, it’s just too easy but with themes that preclude playing with young kids. You match up three items per chapter and then at the end arrange all of the chapters in order to get the full story. These could be just sounds that you need to listen closely to or full blown conversations that fit together. To solve the mystery you will have to scan cards and listen to their audio clips. The audio clips are excellently produced with professional voice acting, background music, and sound effects. All of the art is well done and themed nicely with the set. You will also need to download the Echoes app to scan the cards and listen to the sound clips. Echoes of Empire is an epic, 4X sci-fi strategy game steeped in mystery, intrigue and a thousand years of Royal rule. The tiny package of each set contains 6 chapter tiles, 18 item cards, and a rulebook. For this review, I played through The Dancer and The Cocktail boxes. This is a review of the Echoes game system, not a specific box. It’s an opportunity for you and maybe a small group of friends to put your heads together and solve a mystery. Echoes, from Ravensburger, is a series of auditory mysteries that allow you to put on your detective hat and test if you can fit the pieces of a jumbled up puzzle together in the right order.

The expansion includes a new region to explore (but first you need to find the pirates' map) that holds 21 new quests, 27 new items to loot, and 23 new critters to fight. Lucky for us, they're bringing them over to mobile with the first one, Pirate's Cove, releasing for iOS and Android on August 30. The game has been available since 2015 on Steam, and there are already a couple of DLC packs available there. It's a fun game with more depth than you'd expect at first glance. To be honest, I didn't have high hopes for this one when I read the iTunes blurb, but it's turned out to be a major time sink for both me and my kids. One of the best non-boardgame ports of 2016 is the mobile version of Guild of Dungeoneering. Guild of Dungeoneering Expanding on August 30 It’s helpful to use stitch markers to show where your needles had been, to make sure you continue the same pattern. When your dpns get full, transfer your stitches to your circular needle, being careful to not drop any stitches. Feel free to slightly adjust the amount of rounds you do on each dpn, it helps to make the hat shape more random. Repeat from * to * until the hat is the circumference you would like for it to be. Round 40: M1R on the second dpn, SSK on the third dpn Round 26: M1R on the second dpn, SSK on the third dpn. Rounds 10 – 15 : Repeat rounds 8 and 9 (all even rounds worked as round 8, all odd rounds worked as round 9) Round 9: SSK on the first dpn, M1R on the second dpn. I highly recommend putting a stitch marker on your first dpn, otherwise it’s easy to forget which one is which. Continue this until you have six stitches (3 rounds), then divide evenly onto three dpns. Once it’s the length you want it, M1R between the second to last and last stitch on the first dpn (all of my increases occur between the second to last and last stitch on a dpn, and all of my decreases occur at the end of a dpn, so that instruction will be implied from now on). Stitches/techniques you’ll need for this pattern other than knit, purl, stockinette and basic knit bindoff:Ĭast on with three stitches, working i-cord for several inches (for my felted hat, I did 10 rows for a non-felted hat you’ll probably want about half of that). 3 skeins Lion Brand Wool in Ranch Red, medium weight (approximately the same size as worsted weight).Divide all of that by the length of the test swatch after felting, and that will give you how big around your hat should be before felting. Multiply the length of test swatch before felting by the diameter you want the hat to be after felting. If you’re felting your hat, to figure out how big around it should be, plug in your numbers to this: The circumference of the head I was making it for was 26″, and I was more concerned with the hat shrinking in the diameter and being to small than with it shrinking in height (but the test swatch was helpful because I then knew to make it about twice as tall as I wanted it to actually be). My test swatch was 5″ x 5″, and felted it came out to 2″ x 4″. It’s a little risky to do this with a hat, as it may felt differently across its surface, but my friend wanted a felted wizard hat, and he bought the yarn, so who am I to complain? You’ll need to measure it before and after to see how it proportionally decreases. Felt a test swatch of your yarn (skip if you don’t want to felt your hat): You just want the pattern □ I’ll be offering up directions for what I did, but since this hat is both felted and for a person with a huge noggin (literally, not metaphorically), you can stop the body of the hat and move on to the brim whenever it’s the circumference you want. Do you really want me to explain all the reasons why this pattern works, or do you just want the pattern? This is the sort of pattern that, once you figure out how it works, you can pretty well do it however you want. Now, my non-knitting friends (read: all of you =P), don’t feel like you have to read the instructions in this, I’m just putting this out there so the next person who wants to make a hat like this doesn’t have to go through all the frustration I have to figure out how the hell to do this. Did you know that it’s next to impossible to find a wizard hat pattern on the internet? (Or, at least one that’s offered for free – come on, Internet! This is where you decide to start charging for crap?!) Well, okay, there are wizard hat patterns, but not very cool looking ones: (Also note that that hat is sewn, not knit, which the person I was making this for specifically requested.) I was looking for something more worn looking, more Gandalf-y, like this wasn’t some pasty wizard sitting up in a tower eating grapes and arguing about magical theory but instead actually got out and was taking care of things. The base metal coins were generally alloys of copper (for 2 cent coins and lower), and copper/ nickel (for 3 and 5 cent coins).
